For the texture artists out there

Do you know how to recolor a skin texture?

What I want to do is take a current texture I have made for a Breton and I want to convert it to Redguard/Imperial/Orc/etc... Is there an easy way to do this or do I have to repaint for each race?

Please tell me there is an easy way, I'd rather just release my stuff for one race rather than paint all of them over and over again.

What I have tried with varying results:

+ fiddled with the color balance
+ fiddled with variations
+ fiddled with replace color

any thoughts?

See my last post in this thread for an example.

Gracias

Hurdy. if you are wanting to just recolor skin textures and using photoshop, probably the easiest thing to do would be to copy the texture, then open up a new document, but have the document set to gray scale. Then paste the texture into the new document, this will make the document only show up as black and white. Now copy the black and white version of the texture and upon up yet another new document, but make sure it is set to the normal rgb color setting. now paste the black and white texture in this. you can close all the other documents that you have open now, except of course the newest one that you just made. so now you have a new color document with the black and white texture on it. now create a new layer, then select a color that you would like to reperesent the basic skin tone for that race (greenish for orc, yellowish/goldish for high elf, etc.) and use the paint bucket to fill that entire layer as that color. Next click on the layer that contains the black and white texture and go into filter and sharpen it (only the weakest one though). now go back to the layer with the skin tone color and mess around with its opacity until it blends nicely with the black and white layer. now you don't need to do this but i think that it helps somewhat by making the skin tone not so flat. create a new layer set your color to a color a little bit lighter than the skin tone that you have just chosen and set your tool to the paintbrush with the largest splatter setting. now just do an even coat of splatters all over the layer so that it looks like the entire layer is covered in dots. now get a color just a little darker than the skin tone and add some slatter of that color to the layer. now just change the opacity of this layer until it blends in. then flatten the image and save.

If I were not myself, who would I be?
Would I be you, or would I be me?
The answer I am not able to grasp.
So what is the point even to ask?

Re: For the texture artists out there [re: hurdy gurdy]

1) i do know there is a way to do it... talk to neuman he did it for his nbl2 stuff... i think the way it works is you just assign the texture to one of default ones that ships with game (or your own) and then just change the texture reference for that mesh. Your mesh has to reference multiple textures for this to work
2)tell me how when you find out, cause i did the retexture by hand for all 5 races and yeah its not the much fun but it really does add to the game play...

In the Morrowind.ini file, add the following to the [General] section:

AllowYesToAll=1
This will add a "Yes To All" button to the warning popups.

Hurdy, here is the link to the texture files you wanted. There are quite a few, so just look through them and see what you like. they are all pics that i found off the internet.

Hurdy, there is no easy way to recolor the textures the way you want.. Some of it you will have to do by hand..

If you are using Photoshop, have you used adjustment layers? Just select the areas of the texture you want to recolor and add an adjustment layer that changes the hue and saturation and you should be able to change the colors of specific parts of the textures with precision.

Before you do doing anything that's a lot of work. see how far you get using
Image> adjust> Hue/saturation/luminance

in photoshop.
Also test levels(not as good)

Breton shuld be fairly easy to convert to the other races. well. the other human like ones.

Hurdy, what i told you is just the simple way to do it. from there you may want to go back over the textures and do some fixing up by hand to make it look better.

Re: For the texture artists out there [re: hurdy gurdy]

your best bet would be to:

1) have a texture of a neck or other body part of the desired race open in photoshop, for comparision purposes

2) tweak Hue/Saturation to the shade closest to what you want

3) use Selective color to further change the shade

4) use Brightness/Contrast as needed

this technique is what I use to recolor textures, and I'm pretty happy with it. here are two examples of how i turned Rhedd and Allie's dark elf females into redguards: this and this .

if you want to send your files to me, i'd be happy to help out, just PM me.

Re: For the texture artists out there [re: Terra]

Yes, but use Curves not Brightness/Contrast. Removing unwanted pigments in a skin tone is best done (I found) by using hue/saturation and editing only the specific color band.

If you use Variations remember to lower the saturation after messing about with the colours

Re: For the texture artists out there [re: Terra]

Honestly, I just fiddle with the various color tools (and I use Paint Shop Pro btw) until I come up with what I need. I know that is not much help though :O And I absolutely second what Terra is saying, make sure you have an image of the color you are going for loaded or you will end up thinking 'Hey this looks like a Dunmer!' only to find it is quite off once you get in game.

Terra, I really like those heads btw.

Yes, here are my secrets [re: hurdy gurdy]

If you use Ulead Photo Impact, or something similar, they have many tools

-colorize tool - used as a normal brush, but will change the color while preserving the *intensity* (grayscale)
-color replacement toll - that one is very tricky - I use it rarely, but it's precise
-burn tool - very good when you want to emphasize dark area or create shadows
-intensity tool - a brush that let you darken or lighten area, good for touch up

I use all those tools and more in conjunction with selection tools
-magic selection - select according to color
-bezier selection - select a geometrical shape
-lasso - select complicated shape

basically oncesomethng is selected, your painting or colorizing only apply to the selected area, avoiding costly mistake

calculation tool - I use that a lot to merge part - good to work on complex multi part textures such as morgiah hair - I cut it in parts :

gems, hair, ears .... each in there own file - I create variations, then I recombine using calculation (use if darker, use if lighter, etc)
also I crated masks. (black shape that match ears, gems, hair so I can mask them out)

rarely used but very usefull, the warp tool - I used this to modify LadyE butterfly wings to produce the wing texture that was used in Dale Stoker's very interesting Sylphe Mod (tribunal version)

you can also use predefined color mask that make global changes to the color pattern - can affect all color at once ! good to produce random variations & experiment

global color variation & balance are good for final touch up, such as matching skin color, but not for the fine work.

Most important tool when retexturing => Undo

It's just like Morrowind, gain skill through practice.
All said in the posts above, it's up to you now.
Good luck.
